On this healthy lifestyle journey, it is not expected that we eat “perfect” all the time. Through discipline we train the mind and body to stay away from unhealthy habits that may present challenges to us on our journey. To be honest, it is hard to stay on course and stay out of the pantry, where all the temptations hide. (Quick tip: don’t even buy those foods or store them in the house) Every once in a while, a craving for some chocolate or ice cream may tempt your palate and you give in. Don’t fret! It is fine to indulge here and there, but everything in moderation! I have cravings for sweet and salty foods, and when I do, I allow myself the treat. I maintain a healthy lifestyle and diet, but I enjoy food too. Here are some healthy cheat snacks I munch on to help with cravings.

Chocolate Covered Almond

Almonds provide protein and are filling, while you get the sweetness from the chocolate. If you are a fan of dark chocolate, that is a better option, but I opt for milk chocolate. This snack usually ranges from 220-300 calories per serving so be mindful of your portion.

Tortilla Chips and Salsa or Guacamole

I recently became a fan of guacamole (and avocados). I’ve always enjoyed a bowl of tortilla chips and salsa, but a serving of freshly made guacamole is quite the treat. Tortilla chips provide the salty taste to the acidity of the salsa/guacamole. Avocados, the base of guacamole, is consider a good fat – unsaturated fat – and calories per serving are under 100 calories. A serving of chips is usually 10-25 chips for 120-160 calories. It’s better to reach for this instead of cream-based dips and regular chips.

Frozen Yogurt or Sherbet

Frozen yogurt and sherbet or great alternatives to ice cream. Of course there is still sugar in this sweet treat, but the amount of sugar and calories aren’t nearly as high per serving. Frozen yogurt with some fresh fruit or rainbow sherbet… yumm! Just like ice cream, there are various options of flavors and combinations to enjoy from.
