Do you like fruits and vegetables? I do. It took me a while to get there with vegetables but my taste buds have changed A LOT over the years. I eat way more vegetables than I used to 5 years ago. Fruits have never been an issue for me because I LOVE fruit! However, regardless of if you love them or hate them, do you know how many fruits and vegetables you should eat daily?
The daily recommendation for fruit and vegetable intake is 5-7 servings per day. Yes, that does seem like a lot. Actually it is. Who am I fooling? What constitutes as a serving you ask? When it comes to fruit, one medium piece of fruit or one cup of sliced or mixed fruit is a serving. For vegetables, one cup of cooked, canned or raw vegetables is a serving. However, two cups of leafy vegetables is a serving. Did you get all of that? Okay good!
You can eat fruits and vegetables whenever you would like. It is suggested that you eat 5-6 small meals per day, which would be three meals and 2-3 snacks in between. In that case, you could eat a fruit or vegetable with each of those meals or as snacks. That would be one of the ways to get them into your regimen. Another way to get enough servings is to make smoothies.
Smoothies are my absolute favorite because you can have a big variety and change whenever you want. You can use frozen or fresh fruit for smoothies, then you can add Greek yogurt, low-fat milk, honey (for natural sweetener) or water. Your options are ENDLESS! The great thing about smoothies is that you CAN add vegetables to them too, a leafy vegetable that is. There is nothing wrong with adding leafy vegetables to smoothies such as spinach, kale or collards. They combine well with fruits. You can kill two birds with one stone.
