Miss District of Columbia is our new Miss USA, and will be representing our country in the Miss Universe competition. Yes she is beautiful, but she’s more than just a pretty face.
Deshauna Barber is the definition of black girl magic from her beauty, confidence, strength and humility, which is exactly why The Strength of SHE loves her too. In case you missed the boat, here’s why we love our new Miss USA and you should too.
Deshauna is just as Tough as Any Man
Deshauna is a Logistics Commander of the 988th Quartermaster Detachment at Fort Meade in Maryland. She comes from a family of patriots, with both parents and siblings who served in the military. When asked if the military opening all combat jobs to women would limit our military performance, here’s what she had to say:
“As a woman in the United States Army, I think it was an amazing job by our government to allow women to integrate into every branch of the military. We are just as tough as men. As a commander of my unit, I’m powerful, I am dedicated, and it is important that we recognize that gender does not limit us in the United States.”
Deshauna Believes Beauty is More Than a Pretty Face
In today’s world, we have become obsessed with the perfect beat face, the perfect hair and the perfect skincare regimen, but we aren’t perfect are we? No. Even if you’re beautiful, that doesn’t last forever nor does it reflect what’s on the inside. You must be just as beautiful and confident on the inside as you are on the outside. Here’s what Deshauna had to say about that.
“Serving in the military taught me that being confidently beautiful is about being able to earn respect from people regardless of what you look like. As a women in the military, people associate beauty with weakness and they learn very quickly that I’m extremely strong, and though I’m small, I’m powerful. Confidently beautiful is being myself and being very happy with who I’ve become.”
