After many months (possibly years to be honest with you) I have mastered my simple, everyday makeup routine. This came with a lot of trial and error with different products but I have finally nailed it down and I could not be happier. Now, we all know that I am not a makeup artist or major beauty influencer but I sure do love makeup!
Like many other millennials, I have found myself sitting in front of my laptop, watching so many YouTube tutorials from black beauty bloggers that I had no idea where the time went. I do not even attempt to recreate the looks I see. I just enjoy the art and craftsmanship. I have experimented with the major contouring phase (definitely helped make my head look less round shaped) but I have begun to appreciate less is more; especially with an everyday look.
Fill in Eyebrows
After washing my face, I start off by filling in my eyebrows. Whoever came up with the saying “practice makes perfect” was not lying. A lot of work has went into learning how to perfectly sculpt my eyebrows. I start off by outlining my brow shape with E.L.F.’s Lock on Liner and Brow Cream and then I feel them by moving in the up direction of my brow. I do not do a harsh outline of the top of my brown and use very minimal product at the start of my brow to give them a more natural look.
I also have previously filled my brows with Anastasia Beverly Hill’s Brow Pomade but the drugstore dupe is cheaper and the consistency is more of a cream. I’m starting to learn that the difference in many makeup products is in the technique of the person applying them. The most important step to filling in the brows is the concealer. NYX’s Professional Makeup Full Coverage concealer is applied to the bottom of my brows to make them look more clean and to hide any stray hairs.
Apply Tinted Moisturizer
After my brows are filled, I apply NARS Pure Radiant tinted moisturizer all over my face with my fingers. This product is perfect for me in so many ways. I have dry skin so it moisturizes my face and it acts as a sunscreen. It provides full coverage without feeling like makeup is caked on my face. It is not too liquid-y or runny but it is not heavy like a cream. It is as if the products melt into my face because I have never found a color of foundation that blends as well as this one with my skin. This is my absolutely favorite makeup product. I vow to never go without it again!
Just to add some dimension to my face and to make it look less round, I apply NYX’s High Definition Concealer below my cheeks, under my nose and above my top lip and on my chin area. This product is more of a liquid base compared to the other concealer I use for my brows (which is more like a cream). I blend this in with my clean fingers as well. Because this is a very simple and quick makeup look, major contouring is not needed.
Enhance Your Eyes
The next step includes moving back to the eyes. I apply eyeliner with a product from E.L.F. that looks like a marker and I seriously lucked upon this product. I am not into applying liquid or crayon like eyeliner so this is perfect for me. The Intense Eyeliner in Black has a precise, fine tip to it but it is shaped like a marker. I only apply a very small winged-like eyeliner. For a more dramatic effect, I will add eyeliner to my bottom lash line.
My mom once told me she could not see my eyelashes. This was very discouraging especially since I didn’t plan on adding lash extensions in my monthly budget. I finally started using Cover Girl’s Fiber eyelash as a first coat. This mascara extends the length of my lashes. Then I apply Too Faced’s Better than Sex Mascara to make them appear fuller. I was not immediately sold on this mascara until after I started using the Cover Girl’s mascara first. I apply both mascaras to my top and bottom lashes.
Add a Cute Lip
To really top the look off, I use NYX’s Butter Gloss in the color Fortune Cookie. It is so hard trying to find the perfect nude as a black woman and mine is this gloss. It gives a nude, icy color that I am upset with.
Ensure it Lasts All Day and Night
The last and final step includes me setting my look with Urban Decay’s All Nighter spray. It makes my product last longer and I think it is worth every penny.
To add a bit of dimension and glam to the look, sometimes I may use Wet n Wild’s Color Icon Blusher. I am not exactly sure of the color because I use this product so frequently that he original packing and lettering is not intact. The color is a very dark red, rosy type of color. Then I will top it off with Wet n Wild Mega Glow Highlighting Powder. I will apply highlight on my nose, side of cheeks and slightly under my eyebrow.
I really love this look! If I wore makeup to work, this would be acceptable and it takes less than 10 minutes to do without looking rushed! It is light but covers all blemishes and most products that I use can be found at the drugstore.
